Smallpdf's free tier enforces a daily download limit. Once you hit it, you can't download results from your operations until the next day — or until you sign up for an account. A "task" is any single file operation: compress one PDF, convert one file, merge two documents. Each one counts toward your daily cap.

For casual use — one operation every few days — this is fine. For anyone doing actual work with PDFs — processing multiple client documents, preparing a presentation, working on a research project — you'll hit this wall quickly in a real workflow.
The Sign-Up Funnel
At the 2-task limit, Smallpdf redirects you to a sign-up page. Creating an account gives you more tasks (not unlimited, but more). What Happens to Your Files
Smallpdf processes files on their servers. Files are deleted after a period, but during the operation your document lives on their infrastructure. For sensitive documents — contracts, financial statements, medical records — that's worth knowing.
